DeWalt (stylized as DᴇWALT) Industrial Tool Company is a global American manufacturer of power tools and hand tools for the construction, manufacturing and woodworking industries as well as for DIY enthusiasts. DeWalt is a registered trademark of Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc., a subsidiary of Stanley Black & Decker.
The original company was founded in 1923 by Raymond E. DeWalt, the inventor of the radial arm saw. It grew rapidly and was reorganized and re-incorporated in 1947 when DeWalt Inc. American Machine & Foundry Co., Inc. bought the company in 1949 and sold it to Black & Decker in 1960. Black & Decker parted company with radial arm saw production in 1989 and sold it to two executives. Radial arm saws with the original DeWalt design are still available from the Original Saw Co.
In 1992, Black & Decker began a great effort to rename its professional quality and high-end power tools to DeWalt. In 1994 DeWalt took over the German manufacturer of power tools for woodworking ELU and used ELU's technology to expand its tool line. As of 2001, it manufactures and sells more than 200 power tools and 800 accessories.
DeWalt is now a popular tool brand for commercial contractors. In 2004, Black and Decker bought rival power tool maker Porter-Cable and combined it with DeWalt of Jackson, Tennessee. In 2011, DeWalt launched a range of hand tools for contractors (including utility knives, pliers, adjustable wrenches, tape measures, saws, and hammers).In 2013, it expanded to include mechanical tools, including wrenches, ratchets, and socket wrenches.
In December 2013, DeWaltannounced that it would begin assembling a small selection of its products in the United States, using parts made in Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States are labeled "Built in the US with Global Materials". and Jackson, TN.
In April 2016 DeWalt developed an Android-based smartphone for construction workers. It costs £ 379 ($ 544), is rated for a 2 m (6 ft 7 in) drop of concrete, and has an operating range of −20–60 ° C (−4–140 ° F).
